Sustainability

In 2023, Junction 2 committed to going Beyond Net-Zero by 2025. We will use our creativity to contribute to global and local projects that preserve the natural environment for future generations and to give back to communities on the frontline of climate impacts.

Our guiding principles

1. Taking responsibility for tomorrow:
That means understanding our climate impacts, negative and positive, and doing something about it.

2. Telling it how it is:

We are ambitious, remain transparent and base our actions on science. We tell it how it is every step of the way, reporting annually.

3. Using our voice:
The environment, and the global communities on the frontline of the climate crisis, have leading roles in our festival every year.

4. Going beyond:
We will go beyond net zero emissions, find ways to invest in the future, and be leading-edge in the dance music space in climate action.

5. Taking everyone with us:
We communicate what we do and why, working with our audience and everyone involved in Junction 2 to do great things together.

Our impacts and actions

Travel emissions from audience, suppliers and artist international travel

  • Charge a £1.75p levy for audience travel.
  • Work hard to gather accurate travel data from everyone.
  • Offset travel emissions.
  • No artist private jets in 2025 for Junction 2.

Fuel for generators and vehicles on site

  • Use hydrogenated vegetable oil instead of diesel which has a 90% lower carbon footprint.
  • Work with our contractor, Power Revolution, to reduce the amount of generators used and switch out diesel generators for batteries where possible.
  • In 2025 we will offset the event energy, waste and food emissions that we can't reduce through a carbon removal scheme.

The impacts of food and drink production in our supply chain

  • Increase the amount of delicious veggie and vegan options whilst reducing meat options.
  • All tea, coffee and hot chocolate is Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance.
  • Food serveware is plastic-free and able to be composted in a local facility.
  • Make water easily available for our audience.

The use of materials, waste creation and disposal

  • Waste reduction through reuse initiatives including a reusable cup scheme and lots of water points for refilling water bottles.
  • No single-use plastics sold onsite (e.g. water bottles).
  • Maximise waste recycling and composting with our waste contractor, Greenbox Events.

Biodiversity protection and improvement

  • Last year, we donated almost £20,000 for restoration of Boston Manor Park ecology.
  • Our offsetting fund through on:board earth has protected 158 acres through The Rainforest Trust's Climate Action Fund and planted 451 trees in Nicaragua and Northern Malawi.
  • Ask artists to donate 1% of their fee for our Park and Community Fund to support more work in the local area.
